the coffee house was small and traditional as far as coffee houses go, but nice, i guess. the owner/doorman said "welcome" as we came in and "god bless you" (though no one had sneezed) on our way out. the wall paintings looked nice with otr's traditional rug arrangement. i ran into karin (not literally) in the bathroom, and she told me that it had been confirmed that they would be touring with the cowboys junkies soon! yeah! anyway, we were treated to an unexpected opening act--jason dennie. i like him more and more every time i hear him. (fran bought me the cd!) mike joined him for his last song, "through the eyes of a redwood". it was a nice change, although mike seemed a little unsure of what to do at times. otr's setup was fairly normal for the small coffee house. they all sat down and were illuminated by many candles. jack was, of course, in london. the set: *faithfully dangerous--the usual live version. nice, but nothing special *bothered--beautiful, as always... karin apologized for the band being "stripped down and shrunken" that evening. *the seahorse--karin forgot the intro, but other than that... *little blue river--karin played this on her acoustic guitar. i didn't like it NEARLY as well this way. i guess that was part of the "stripped down and shrunken". *all i need is everything--fran wanted me to mention that she loves it more and more every time she sees it live. *etcetera whatever--etc. whatever ****************************EVERYMAN'S DAUGHTER****************************** i love this song!!!! linford's organ sounded really cool last night on this song. kudos to kerry. *orphan girl--karin commented that linford makes the setlists and she thought it was funny to see this song follow everyman's daughter. there were only 3 of us in the audience who agreed. *poughkeepsie--forgive me, but it was boring. *moth (acousitc)--we both really liked this song. i only caught a few lines of the song. most of it after "same ol' question" faded into the typical karin-slur. does anyone have lyrics? last time i checked they weren't up on the web page. (*paul and virginia--on the setlist, but not played) *lucy--an interesting drum beat at the beginning by brian. the band had a lot of fun playing this song. and, i swear to god, karin actually sang "lucy" (lu-see) instead of "lu-say". *jack's valentine--always a favorite, but linford sounded like he was asleep while singing. too bad dug wasn't there! (*latter days--believe it or not, this was listed but not played. i didn't know what to do not hearing that song.) (*cast me away--they left this out, too.) *and can it be--bad song to end with, in my opinion, but they did, nonetheless. nothing else was listed on the setlist, so linford must have planned it this way. overall, i enjoyed the show. it had been a little while since i had seen the band, and i was really looking forward to hearing the new stuff. at least i got to hear one new song. over the rhine was also playing a 9:30 show there that night, so the band (and us) had to exit pretty quickly, so there was no time for encores or chit-chat. patience and eve are available without the covers now, by the way. i don't know if anyone had mentioned that before.
