Well, last night I finally got to see Over the Rhine again as the tour with the Cowboy Junkies made its stop in southern California. They played in Royce Hall on the campus of UCLA, which was quite a beautiful venue. OtR played for approximately 40 minutes. I've tried to reconstruct the setlist from memory, so this may not be perfectly accurate, but I think it's pretty close: Faithfully Dangerous Tumbleweeds (?) All I Need Is Everything Anyway The Seahorse Poughkeepsie Moth Latter Days Crowd response seemed quite positive. With each successive song, the applause seemed longer and louder. After their set, I stepped out into the foyer to see what the merchandise tables had to offer, but couldn't get near them because so many people were crowding around buying GDBD (which was apparently the only disc that they had available last night). I certainly couldn't give any sort of estimate of how many copies they sold, but I, at least, was pleased with the number of people I saw walking around with a copy in their hands. The Junkies were okay. It'd been 8 or 9 years since the last time I saw them and I was kind of disappointed that they seem to have moved away a bit from the country underpinnings that their music used to have. Anyway, Karin and Linford were onstage with them for probably 75 to 80 percent of their songs. Terri joined them for perhaps 50 to 60 percent, and Jack even joined in on a few songs. All in all, it was a fairly good show, though certainly not as good, IMHO, as it would've been if OtR had been headlining instead of opening. Hopefully, someday soon, they'll have a tour of their own that will bring them back here.
