It's starting to sound like an addiction support meeting, we all tell our story and sit back for the next one. Well, my name is Jeff and I was at Emery... I showed up at Kaldi's about 4:20. There were only about 10 people there at that point, but it filled up quickly. I finally met Shelly, who I don't think sat down the entire time I was there. She seemed to be juggling ten things at once. It appeared to be through an act of her will that everything went smoothly, food was bought, the email photo book was signed, roses were sold, the very few extra tickets were distributed. I put a lot of faces to names (and on a more superficial level, a lot of very beautiful faces - how's this for a new slogan "Over The Rhine, the best looking fans in the world"). People seemed to reccognize me when I mentioned my email address (toast), I honestly never thought of it as being all that distinctive until last night. There was one word that seened to be on everyone's lips, and that word was "dug". Every ten seconds, you'd here "Is dug here yet?", "I can't wait to meet dug", "I hope dug gets here soon", the man is a celebrity. A mighty roar went up when he finally arrived. I stumbled over to Emery a little after seven, Shelly had warned us that the show would start at eight and not at seven as advertised on the tickets. The tiny lobby was jammed eight deep with people trying to buy merchandise. I think a good deal of money was made. The "Mighty Wurlitzer" pumped out some tunes until eight. At eight (with the concessions area still packed) Todd came out and introduced Peter Mulvey who played an exteremely solid half hour set. Around nine, Todd introduced Over The Rhine. Here's the setlist: First set, total time one hour twenty minutes: (Karin, Linford, Ric, Brian, Chris) Latter Days Faithfully Dangerous - Linford reads from a medical text about the heart Seahorse/Summertime (+Terri Templeton) All I Need Is Everything (-Terri Templeton) Etcetera Whatever A Gospel Number Poughkeepsie (-Ric and Brian) It Came Upon A Midnight Clear The Oxen - a poem read by Karin with piano accompaniment by Linford Greensleeves Mary's Waltz (+Brian and Terri) Silent Night (duet) (-Brian) Amelia's Last Happy To Be So (-Terri +Brian, Ric, and Jack Henderson - a six piece band!) Thank You My Angel Jack's Valentine - to tumultuous applause Intermission at which time those of us doing the "rose thing" gathered in the hall, completely blocking off access to the men's room. It was very cool, we started as the band was getting ready to start playing. A seemingly endless line of people streamed down the aisle and into the orchestra pit piling the piano high with roses. Second set, total time (including encores) one hour: Eyes Wide Open - started an ever increasing number of people dancing along the side aisles Within Without Sea and Sky - "This is your last chance" - Karin, refering to the singalong at the beginning Iron Curtain Fly Dance My Love Is A Fever Happy with Myself - with the Shelly-led conga line Daddy Untwisted Standing ovation, encore one: If I'm Drowning - with the crowd still standing Standing ovation, encore two: I Painted My Name - The only thing I had hoped to receive out of the whole night was to hear this live one last time. It is one of the best songs ever written. I braved the merchandise table, talked to a few people and headed home (rolled me over the Little Blue River at about 2:15am, I was tempted to pull over, but kept going). Overall, a great show. I did see one camcorder running in about the third row, I don't know if it belonged to someone on the list, but the video does exist out there (if it did belong to someone here, what do you want for a copy?). Of course, it would have been cool had the show started at seven and there were three sets (or if the show had started at six and there were four, etc) I'm not complaining, I was very happy with what was presented. I can't help but notice, though, that the show as presented (two hours twenty minutes) would fit perfectly on a two CD set...
